What is Therapeutic Recreation?
Therapeutic Recreation (or Recreation Therapy) is the practice of using purposeful recreation and leisure to address the specific needs and goals of individuals living with disabilities. These needs may include but are not limited to, mental health, physical rehabilitation, effective social skills, and community integration. It is holistic, compliments other disciplines, and is person centered.
It has been documented that people involved in therapeutic recreation in a clinical setting heal faster, adjust better to their illness/ injury/ disabling condition, have improved motor and cognitive function, and reintegrate into the community more readily.
